Blizzard of '13 in North Reading

The blizzard did not cause much damage.

The blizzard of '13 will always be remembered, but not for power outages and accidents.

As a result of the blizzard, North Reading saw about two feet of snow and residents spent a lot of time shoveling. However, no power outages were reported to us or the police department.

According to police, they only had one hazard call. The call came in on Saturday at 12:11 p.m. A downed tree that took down an electrical service wire, that was connected to a house on Haverhill Street, and caused a utility pole to snap in half. RMLD was able to respond and repair it, police said.

Department of Public Works Director Richard Carnevale said, "The town was prepared for this storm. The DPW employees and our snow plow contractors worked tirelessly Friday, Friday night and Saturday to clear the roads. We still have work to do Sunday to clear parking lots at schools and town buildings, and to plow sidewalks."

As usual, the town has done a great job on snow removal. Drive down Haverhill St. and there is no doubt where the Reading/North Reading line is, because the street goes from slushy wet pavement in NR to snowy mess in Reading.

I agree, once you hit a town line leaving NR the roads are a mess. This happens every year. Good job!

Maybe a little more time on the school parking lots and a little less time on Haverhill street?

John they have to concentrate on the roads first and then the school parking lots. The schools were closed. What was the issue with them plowing Haverhill St?.

Is that a town bylaw Joe?

My point is, maybe having bare pavement on Haverhill street is less important than getting town facilities at least functional. There's a balance. If the money spent on pre-treating were spent on an extra loader working the school lots, maybe we'd have had school today? If the plows had made one less pass on the main roads and one more in the parking lots, maybe?

I appreciate the work the DPW does as much as anybody. But I still think it's totally ridiculous that in 40 hours, we couldn't have the schools cleared.

I think it is a reasonable question to ask, but I suspect that the issues with the schools are a little more widespread than clear parking lots. Streets have to be safe for kids to walk to their bus stops, or to school, walkways and entryways have to be cleared, etc. Maybe the schools should put out a call for all hands in this situation. I'll show up with my shovel if you guys will.

The DPW and the private contractors do a fantastic job of snow plowing in our town. We pay a little more because we pre treat the roads but as you all can see it is worth it.
