Your kids can drop off their edible books at the library at 4 p.m.
The Flint Memorial Library is holding their first annual Edible Book Contest Monday, April 8. All are welcome to submit an entry. Entries should be 95 percent edible and can be based on a book title, character from a book or a book title pun. Children's librarian Emma Weiler is co-sponsoring the event with high school librarian Kim Smith. Weiler said she came across the International Edible Book Festival last year while doing research into running a program for kids to make mini books out of candy and cookies. The festival is an event where people "recreate a book either as a literal interpretation out of edible materials, or as an abstract representation, or as a pun on a well-known book." Watch the play at the high school.
The North Reading High School Masquers are proud to present Dolly Parton's 9 to 5. This famous movie was made into a Broadway Hit in 2009 and is now at NRHS. Tickets are on sale at NRHS for $15 Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for performances on February 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can also be reserved by emailing nrhsmasquersblub@gmail.com.

The new play will be performed at the Quannapowitt Playhouse.
On Sunday, February 10, the Quannapowitt Playhouse features "8," the new production by Dustin Lance Black focusing on the debate over California's Proposition 8 same sex marriage ban, which is expected to end up in the Supreme Court. The play has a cast of about 20 and was first staged in New York and Los Angeles in 2012 with famous actors such as Morgan Freeman, Martin Sheen, Kevin Bacon, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney. In the Boston area, it was previously performed at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. Lifelong Wakefield resident Chip Sheehan is directing the production, while his wife Elizabeth is the producer. Sights of Reading Calendar Supports the Community!
The recipient of the beautiful “Sights of Reading” calendar will be thinking of you all year long as they view the photos from around Reading. Hollingsworth Field, Old South Church, Town Forest, Reading Post Office, and Meadowbrook are a few of the locations showcased in the 11” x 17” hanging calendar. Each month features an 8.5” x 11" photograph. The proceeds raised from the calendar sales will benefit Gold Award community service projects. The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award any Girl Scout can earn. The importance of the First Amendment and the concept of "intellectual freedom" might not always be readily apparent to most kids, but Banned Books Week is a great opportunity to make those lessons come alive for children—and adults. Banned Books Week is held annually during the last week of Sept. (Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2012). The week is an occasion for libraries and bookstores across the U.S. to help folks realize just how real and ongoing a problem censorship is. The Flint Memorial Library will have a small display of about a dozen books next to the stairwell that will be out all week.
