Absolutely Appalling

Five days to go before nomination papers must be turned in for town election and there are ZERO candidates for an open seat on the North Reading Board of Selectmen. Approximately 15,000 people live in this town and as I write this, in addition to no selectmen candidates, there are no contested races in the other contests. There has not been a contested race for school committee in more than 10 years. This is highly discouraging, especially to someone who has made it a point to give as much back to the community as I can. Come on, North Reading. Wake up. Towns don't run on their own, and North Reading is no exception.

Could it be that the qualifications are too stringent? I have not read the requirements for being on the board, but maybe that has something to do with it? Also, it is a big commitment...maybe people are just too busy. Just guessing...I agree..it should be something people would be dying to get on to.
