Hornets U12 Softball Team Win Tournament

Post Contributed by Parents and Coaches

Last weekend June 21-22, under beautiful blue skies, the North Reading Hornets U12 Green MiddleEssex softball team went the distance and took it all in the 2014 Battle in the Borough in Westborough, MA. In addition to their impressive bats, phenomenal pitching and impeccable defensive fielding, their winning attitudes and sportsmanship were top notch throughout the entire weekend.

The Hornets' winning weekend began with three games on Saturday, when they faced fierce competition from the Douglas, Hopkinton and Franklin teams. The day ended with a 2-1 record for North Reading after losing to Douglas, who went on to become the #1 seed. The MVP awards for Saturday's three games were presented to Jess Ferrazzani, Emma Valade and Leah Ferrazzani.

With Saturday's loss to Douglas, the Hornets U12 Green Team was ranked as #5 of 10 seeds. Spirits were still high when they returned to the fields on Sunday, to face the host team Westborough, who was placed 4th, in the quarter final game. With the gas pedal to the floor, the girls dominated with hot bats and great fielding. In the third inning, Vanessa Zewiey got the bats going for North Reading, with the Hornets scoring 19 runs to put the game away. Jessy Leblanc got on base 3 times in the third and scored all 3 times. MVP of the game, Hailey Sanphy, went 2 for 2 with 1 walk, scoring 3 runs and hit a deep shot to right field for a triple. Jess and Leah Ferrazzani went 3 for 3 and 3 for 4, respectively, with timely hits to contribute to the win. Final score North Reading 25 Westborough 5.

In the semi-final round, the Hornets faced their new found friends from Hopkinton who were the 7th place seed. Julia DiNapoli started the 2nd inning rally with a single. With bases loaded and 2 outs, Abigale Bilodeau hit a line drive single plating 2 runs to help lead the way for North Reading. Pitcher and MVP of the game, Abby Carroll, pitched 4 strong innings striking out 4 for the Hornets and was supported with solid defensive plays behind her all game. Once again, playing as a team and firing on all cylinders, the girls prevailed. Final score North Reading 16 Hopkinton 5.

The triumph over Hopkinton led them to the championship game against Douglas, the number one seed, whom they had faced earlier in the tournament. After losing to Douglas on Saturday, it took a total team effort, starting with MVP and Pitcher, Maggie Majeski, who threw 4 strikeouts over her 5 inning reign, only yielding 1 run. Stellar defensive plays were turned in by shortstop, Abby Belbin, who also contributed with 2 hits in the game. Taela Scott got a timely hit in the top of the 4th, with 2 outs, driving in 2 runs for Hornets. Catcher Emma Valade (who caught all 3 Sunday games for North Reading) chipped in with 2 hits and 1 walk, scoring 3 runs in the Championship game. Final score North Reading 11 Douglas 1.

The team is coached by Cory Bilodeau, Kurt Ferrazzani, Mike Leblanc and Keith Zewiey. A huge thanks to Heav'nly Donuts of North Reading as our sponsor.
