Starbucks May be Opening in North Reading

The coffee shop plans to open in the old Sunrise Bagels location.

Starbucks will go before the Community Planning Commission Tuesday night for approval for their site plan review. The coffee company is planning to open a location where Sunrise Bagels is located.

Sunrise Bagels is planning to close their shop and relocate to Wilmington. If Starbucks is able to get the required approvals from boards and committees in town, they will take over that location.

According to Community Planning Administrative Assistant Debbie Savarese, Starbucks plans to make changes to the exterior of the building. They may want to add in a drive-through and additional outdoor seating, she said.

Joe, Where is our sewer system to attract business? why does Andover and Reading have beautiful downtown on rt 28? You where a selectman for 15 years.
JIM April 11, 2013 at 10:53 PM
Hey, Batman if You want a sewer system move back to the city.
Joe Veno April 11, 2013 at 10:58 PM
Batman have you ever noticed as you fly through Andover Sq. and Reading Sq. in your Batmobile How they were built as a Square you could walk around in?
Joe Veno April 11, 2013 at 11:00 PM
Batman you find a way to get the money and you will get your sewer system. If you think it is that easy tell the town how to do it.
Jim Pothier April 11, 2013 at 11:03 PM
Joe, I don't think Batman is using his real name. If he were, he would be Bruce Wayne.
Batman April 11, 2013 at 11:14 PM
Okay no sewer, What happened to 28? You should be able to answer that.
Joe Veno April 12, 2013 at 12:42 AM
Very interesting Jim.
Joe Veno April 12, 2013 at 12:43 AM
What is the question about Rt 28?
melee April 12, 2013 at 02:04 AM
I would also be genuinely interested in learning why NRs Route 28 looks the way it does particularly in light of the nice downtown areas that our neighbors to the north and south have. It is one of the more frustrating aspects of the town in addition to the lack of sidewalks. Changes to the look of Route 28 could really go a long way to attracting more businesses to the town and also more families into the town. For starters there needs to be some restrictions on the signage to help give the town a more unified look from the current 1980s hodgepodge that currently exists. The new Joe Fish helps and the plaza with Stop and Shop is also a good start. The Walmart plaza and CVS plazas are badly in need of updating. It would be nice if some portions of Rte 28 could be broken up to allow for greenage and pedestrian access.
Batman April 12, 2013 at 12:38 PM
Never very well put, Unfortunatly Joe does not think there is anything wrong with 28. Thus during his tenure of 15 years nothing was accomplished with the beautification of rt 28. Joe, do drive out of North Reading?
Batman April 12, 2013 at 12:41 PM
Never = Melee
Tony April 12, 2013 at 01:00 PM
28 could use a spiffing up, but that would take millions of dollars. If only the taxes in NR were high enough to support that cost... oh wait.
melee April 12, 2013 at 01:16 PM
Many of these things could be done without tax increases to the town. The state's metropolitan planning commission for example is eager to work with the town on planning and achieving pedestrian access but my understanding from people in that agency, the town has shown little to no interest in such initiatives and thus the state resources go to other towns. Putting pressure on the land owners on 28 to clean up their act is also not a tax intensive initiative, rather it requires a strong board to set policies and a timeline for the businesses to comply with in. The larger issue is the view that things are fine the way that they are, this view stands in the way of progress and hence 1980s hodgepodge. Changes to route 28 would enhance our community as a whole and certainly business would be attracted to a coherent town center.
Tony April 12, 2013 at 02:19 PM
Melee, that was more a joke about our taxes and the state of RT 28. I'd also be curious to know why the town has shown little to no interest in improving one of the main streets in the town. The CVS plaza could definitely use some work, but the beautification elsewhere could be as simple as new lighting and planting trees along the sidewalks. Getting rid of WalMart would be awesome, but I'm sure they contribute big tax dollars. The Walgreens/NE Liquors area looks nice, but there's no continuity along the route. Regardless of any beautification efforts, I think a big step in the right direction would be filling vacant storefronts. But I can see how this becomes a chicken and egg problem. Joe Veno, I get it, you like first and last names. Feel free to drop the "full name campaign" as the majority of the people here don't like to use first and last names.
Jessica April 12, 2013 at 03:55 PM
75% of the buildings on our stretch of 28 should be bulldozed down. That would be a great start. Those sheds for sale across the street from Kittys look better than most places on Main st. Who has a bulldozer?
melee April 12, 2013 at 05:39 PM
Tony, sorry I got too serious ;-) As for you Joe Veno on the first name last name policing, what matters is that people are responsible in what they write. Lots of first name last namers are not. People should have to right to have a personal self that is different and seperate from their work identity. I am always amused that people talk about using their full name and then say the most ignorant things right after. That should not be a source of pride.
Joe Veno April 12, 2013 at 11:08 PM
Batman or who ever you are, Please show me where I said there is nothing wrong with Rt. 28. That question, Do I ever drive out of North Reading, shows what a fool you are.
Joe Veno April 12, 2013 at 11:16 PM
melee, I am not policing. You must be very new to Patch. Read it for a while and read the cheap shots people take at other people because they know no one knows who they are. ( At least they think that) Do you think it is ok for people to do that?
Batman April 13, 2013 at 02:48 PM
Joe, it seems this discussion began with a cheap shot by you. All I know is you a were a selectman for 15 years, and during those 15 years you put us in a large whole. Joe what is the difference between Andover and Reading. If you say money, part of the selectman's job is to find the money. Enough with the excuses and the negative rhetoric coming from you. Say something positive. We should be begging Starbucks to come to our town. Remember Mr. Selectman, that is additional sales tax receipts. Imagine, you may ruin the school system if you get on the school committee. By the way, I heard you misspelled sjchool in your announcement. Job well done.
Michael Kushakji April 13, 2013 at 02:58 PM
Hi Joe, Ouch, you took some cheap shots at me in the paper. I guess you read the book "How to win friends and influence people". I am on two of the most important sub-committees. The Tech (it stands for technology) and the policy committee, so I am not sure why you insinuated that I was not on any committees or putting my time in. As for graduation, I don't have to be there, and I am usually either coaching soccer, or work gets in the way. I personally don't even understand why you are running. I am running because I actually truly care for the welfare of the children in North Reading. I have 3 kids in town, and I am truly concerned for their education, as well as for the entire communities. As for this month, I recommended that we bring in the Science Olympiad in to present the results of the state competition, that I attended. I asked the Coach to also present information about the team and the program, Mr. G. is a great coach. Thanks for the cheap shots.
Tony April 13, 2013 at 03:33 PM
Anyone who has 3 kids in the system is going to do a better job than someone who has zero kids in the system, 10 out of 10 times. I just hope people don't vote for Joe Veno based on knowing the name. Joe Veno, if you think you're qualified for the school committee, please feel free to list your accomplishments during your tenure as selectman. I don't know you, all I know so far is your incredibly abrasive online personality. If you actually deliver results, this is a decent forum to tout them. As someone who moved to NR based on the school system, I'd love to know how you'd work to improve the school system.
Joe Veno April 13, 2013 at 09:20 PM
Michael all I said was I have the time to do what is expected of a School Committee member. Not a shot at you at all. Just a statment of truth.
Mary April 13, 2013 at 09:57 PM
I agree with Tony. I believe he would have more of an investement than Mr. Veno would at this point
Michael Kushakji April 13, 2013 at 10:11 PM
Joe, After 3 years of hard work and the tons of hours I invested, are you saying I don't have the time. I have attended every meeting except for 1 in my 3 years. I am unable to attend the March meetings due to my work commitment, but by the time town meeting happens all the prep work has been completed. My work commitment in March, during town meeting week is running a tech conference of College Mathematicians teaching other college professors how to use technology in the classroom. The conference is called ICTCM (yes it is international), and Pearson sponsors the conference. Pearson is the largest education book publisher in the world. The nice thing about working the conference is I can share what I have learned with the superintendent and the school committee of what I learned and where we are heading in teaching math in the 21st century. As for not attending graduation, that is just pomp and circumstance, not where the real work is done on the school committee.
Michael Kushakji April 13, 2013 at 10:12 PM
Joe, Please clarify this for me. Did you vote for the new schools?
Michael Kushakji April 13, 2013 at 10:13 PM
Joe, I did vote for the new schools.
Joe Veno April 13, 2013 at 10:30 PM
i will tell you how I voted after you prove to me that you did vote for the new school. I am suprised that a sitting School committee member thinks that attending one of the biggest events in a students life and education is just, pomp and circumstance.
Michael Kushakji April 14, 2013 at 02:17 AM
Don't be surprised. As a a very committed community member there are things I cannot make due to other civic responsibilities that chair excuses my absence. As for the vote I will be happy to publish both of my yes votes in the paper if legally allowed. You should do the same.
melee April 14, 2013 at 01:50 PM
Joe, I am not at all new to the Patch which is why I can factually say that you are one person who frequently speaks about using your name as if it as a badge of honor while simultaneously writing some of the most non productive commentary on this blog. Please note that I said that it is important that people be responsible for what the write which in other words means whether you use your real name or a pseudonym, it is important to write things that are productive to the conversation and not ignorant, xenophobic or otherwise not helpful to the matters being discussed.
melee April 14, 2013 at 01:58 PM
Further, Joe, you called people cowards on this very thread for not using their real names. Is that not a cheap shot? It also shows a very limited view of things by you. That is if people do not do what you do then they must be cowards because in your view only a coward would not use his/her real name on an internet blog. You are wrong on this point. If your assertion is that people are more likely to speak responsibly when using their real name, state that (it is not necessarily true but, okay) but do not call people names because they choose to remain anonymous for whatever reason. I am glad that you use your real name by the way because I know a lot about you and your views and manner of dealing with others and now I can make an informed choice at the polls.
