Two Businesses Open on Main Street

AAA and GNC opened new locations in North Reading.

The Walmart strip mall on Main Street is at capacity with the addition of two chain stores.

Sandwiched between Family Dollar and Marshalls, AAA and GNC complete the mall that also includes Walmart and Citizens Bank.

AAA offers travel services as well as insurance. GNC is a nutritional supplement store that has more than 8,400 locations, including 6,300 across the United States. GNC has stores in 54 countries.

Customers at both AAA and GNC will no longer need to leave town. The closest AAA locations were in Peabody and Burlington. The closest GNC stores were Wilmington and Reading.

With the two slots now filled, the three highest profile openings left in North Reading are the former Stop & Shop, the vacant Sears Hardware and the former gas station at Park and Haverhill streets. No word on any changes at any of these properties, but a former Stop & Shop in Chelmsford is being redeveloped so there is hope for North Reading.

The Stop & Shop closed in early 2011 and moved up the road to its current location. Ocean State Job Lot had explored moving into the former supermarket location, but decided against it after community opposition.
