The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2014 was released earlier this month.

As the year winds down, book stores are full of almanacs and other time capsules reflecting on the year that was.

Throughout the next few weeks, we’re going to take a look at some of features in the World Almanac and Book of Facts 2014, which was released in print in November and in e-publication earlier this month.

Today, we look at magazines in the year 2013.

You may be surprised to learn that the best-selling magazine in the United States was a niche magazine, as was the second runner-up. The third most popular magazine was for quite a different market, as was the fourth. And the fifth? Well, that was an old standby, a favorite of many for years.

Here’s a look at the Top 10 Best-Selling Magazines of 2013:

  1. AARP The Magazine (21.9 million circulation)
  2. AARP Bulletin (21.7m)
  3. Game Informer Magazine (7.8m)
  4. Better Homes and Gardens (7.6m)
  5. Reader’s Digest (5.2m)
  6. Good Housekeeping (4.3m)
  7. Family Circle (4.0m)
  8. National Geographic (4.0m)
  9. People (3.5m)
  10. Woman’s Day (3.3m)

What about Entertainment Weekly? That magazine that magically finds itself in almost every mailbox in the world due to random giveaways? Well, EW ranked only 40th in 2013 with a paid circulation of 1.7m.
