House Rules: A Book Discussion

It is not easy being different. But, we're all different in so many ways. More ways than we even realize.

Jodi Picoult examines how one child is different than others in her 2011 book "House Rules: A Novel," which is being discussed at the Flint Memorial Library book group Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in North Reading. If you've read the book or are interested in joining a book group — stop by! Newcomers are always welcome.

In Picoult's novel, Jacob — a teenager with Asperger's Syndrome and a penchant for solving crimes and listening to police scanners — is accused of killing his tutor. Picoult examines what it's like to be different in American society, how Asperger's can affects a child and family, and how the U.S. legal system can work differently for different people.

Before you click away from here, take a look at the collage: Those are different book covers from around the world. I find it interesting to see how books are presented in different countries. The U.S. version has a boy by the water, while the Australian version has an older teen buried in bed. The U.K. version has a boy, not sure of his age, huddled in a blanket, sort of a mix of the other two. Interesting stuff!
