Flooding Possible with More Heavy Rain Expected Monday Night

Another batch of heavy rain is expected on Monday evening and again on Tuesday.

For the second time in four days, flooding is possible in North Reading from heavy rain.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Monday evening through Tuesday evening for North Reading, as well as most of eastern Massachusetts and parts of Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

It is the second flood watch issued in the past four days – a similar alert was issued on Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea moved through. The North Reading area saw more than three inches of rain from that storm.

“Showers are expected to overspread the region from west to east (Monday) afternoon,” the weather service said as it issued the flood watch. “The heaviest rain is expected to occur (Monday night), where some locations could pickup an inch of rain in just one hour in embedded thunderstorms.”

There may be a lull early Tuesday “but additional showers and embedded thunderstorms are expected to develop again Tuesday afternoon and persist into the evening.”

By Tuesday evening, another 2.5 inches of rain could fall.

The flood watch means that flooding is possible “especially since the ground is quite saturated.” In particular, there is concern about “urban areas” with poor drainage and small rivers and streams “since they are running quite high from the recent heavy rainfall.”

The weather service recommends that anyone who is concerned about the possibility of flooding to monitor later weather forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings.

“Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop,” the weather service said.
