What is The Story Behind This Banner?

There is an uplifting message to the sign that is in North Reading Center.

Have you driven through North Reading Center recently and wondered about the banner on the Batchelder School fence that reads “Wonder…? Be a little kinder than is necessary.”

The message comes from the book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio, which is being read by every middle school student and staff member.

North Reading Middle School Principal Catherine O’Connell said the lesson of kindness is “as important as academics and would go a long way in preventing bullying.”

The Parent Teachers Association and Community Impact Team agree purchased enough books to supply each student and staff member with a copy.

Mary Prenney, director of elder services, said the lessons of kindness should not just apply to students. Senior citizens are joining middle-schoolers for homeroom reading sessions that are followed by discussions.

The banner is hoping to remind North Reading residents “to be a little kinder than is necessary as they do about their days.”
