Re-connect With North Reading's Past on Sunday

The North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society is hosting an open house at the Rev. Daniel Putnam House on Sunday, May 19.

Here’s a sure sign of spring in North Reading – the North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society is re-opening the doors of the Rev. Daniel Putnam House for an open house on Sunday, May 19 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Winter is a distant memory and the nearly 300-year-old North Reading landmark is ready for its public. The Putnam House, which is at 27 Bow St., was built in 1720 and was constructed to house Rev. Putnam, who was North Parish’s first reverend. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In addition to exploring one of North Reading’s favorite historic homes, visitors on Sunday will get to see two new exhibits:

  • North Reading’s military exhibit – The North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society will display the Naval Reserve uniform of Harvey M. Abbott, a North Reading resident who served during World War I. Biographical information and photos will also be part of the exhibit.
  • Hats – The North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society will display dozens of the hats from the society’s collection, including hats for both women and men in all shapes and colors. You’ll get to see a somber hat from the 19th century as well as the hats worn by flappers and flamboyant hats from the 1950s.

There will also be North Reading items for sale, including books, T-shirts and Christmas ornaments.
