Police Apprehend Suspect Who Tried to Use Martins Pond as Escape Route

North Reading Police arrested Christian Giangrande, 24, last known address 29 Pleasant St., North Reading, and charged him on a warrant, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer and larceny more than $250.

A suspicious person call on Wednesday morning resulted in a foot chase, a suspect trying to walk, swim and row away from police in Martins Pond.

Police responded to Main Street at 8:10 a.m. after two men were found passed out in a car. The vehicle they were in had front tire damage, according to police.

When an officer arrived, one man ran toward Martins Pond. Police set up a perimeter and called for North Reading Fire Department.

Police spotted the man walking in the pond and then swimming to a rowboat along the shoreline. The man got into the rowboat and tried to row away from police.

Firefighters and police officers got into the Fire Department’s water rescue boat and raced after the man. Police apprehended him a short time later.
