Police Warn Residents of Hypodermic Needles in North Reading Center

North Reading Police are warning residents that several uncapped hypodermic needs have been found in and around North Reading Center.

Needles have been found on Haverhill Street, south of Park Street intersection and one was found on Park Street toward Cobbler’s Way.

"These are most likely deposited by IV drug users and should be considered contaminated and a bio-hazard. If you see a discarded needle, do not pick it up, contact the police for removal," police said.

"Report suspicious people in your neighborhoods, often these items (used needles) will continue to reappear in those affected neighborhoods. Also speak with your kids and warn them of the dangers of accidental needle sticks which include possible disease transmission and what they should do if they see one.

"A local 7-year-old was exposed during an accidental needle stick after the child found a needle in his neighborhood several years ago. Thankfully the child was ok but it reminded all of us of the importance of speaking with our kids on the matter," said police.
