The winningest baseball coach in Massachusetts high school history plans to retire at the end of the season.

North Reading baseball coach Frank Carey, who became the winningest baseball coach in the state earlier this month, told the Boston Herald his plans.

“It's the right time to make the move,” Carey told the Globe. “There is a new school coming, a new environment around here and it's just the right time to do it.”

Carey’s Hornets won the Division 3 state championship in 2012 and the long-time coach decided to stay on until the sophomores of that championship team graduated.

Carey now has 728 careers wins and his Hornets are headed back to another MIAA Division 3 tournament.
