Will There Be a Fourth of July in North Reading Next Year?

Next year's festivities are in jeopardy unless more volunteers step forward.

North Reading is still buzzing a week after the Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza.

John Magazzu, who is chairman of the Bring Back the Fourth Committee, said 5,000 people watched the North Reading fireworks, which he called “the best fireworks display north of Boston."

However, Magazzu is also warning that the Fourth of July festivities won’t return to North Reading unless more volunteers step forward.

Magazzu said the committee was happy to bring back the Fourth to North Reading with a 20-minute fireworks extravaganza, three-day carnival and Movie in the Park.

But he added that the all-volunteer event will need 10 to 20 more volunteers to make next year’s Fourth happen.

“I am very disappointed in the lack of community service and commitment our town’s people are willing to get involved. It takes more than a handful to pull this off and given the detours and added regulatory hurdles this year over last,” he said.

Magazzu said the committee will have a meeting in about a month to review this year’s event, which cost about $30,000, and look forward to next year.

He said there are many possibilities for next year, but if North Reading is going to have any Fourth events next year, more volunteers need to step forward.

“The committee is very tired. Without extra volunteers and support from the community, it is questionable if this event can be repeated. I would be very happy to see a few energetic individuals take this to the next level with a nice Friday-Saturday-Sunday event next year. But you need to start now and build now and prepare now,” he said.
