Hornets Snag Spot in Boys Lacrosse Postseason

The MIAA announced its playoff pairings on Friday and North Reading High School snagged the No. 7 seed.

A strong North Reading High School boys lacrosse season will continue for a minimum of one more game. That's because the Hornets learned on Friday that their regular season campaign was good enough for the No. 7 seed in the East Division 3 playoffs.  The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association held its postseason meeting on Friday and assigned match ups to the field of 33 teams. North Reading earned a preliminary round bye thanks to a regular season record of 14-6. The Hornets drew No. 26 Sacred Heart and will host the contest that is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. With a victory in the first round, North Reading would advance to take on either Bishop Fenwick or Hanover in a second round tilt. The date and time of that game …

Should Massachusetts Prosecute 17-Year-Olds as Adults?

The house passed legislation to treat most 17-year-olds as juvenile defenders. Is this a compassionate or dangerous change?

Massachusetts is currently one of only 11 states that tries 17-year-olds as adults. A bill passed this week by the state's House of Representatives would make these teenagers juvenile defenders, according to a report by 7News Boston. That will put the commonwealth in line with most other states, where adult court is reserved for individuals 18 and older. The bill still allows the state to try 17-year-olds as adults in serious cases, like murders. But proponents hope the change will reduce cases of rape in the state's prison system by keeping younger inmates away from older, stronger convicts.  What do you think? Are we getting too soft on younger defendants? Or is this a justified, compassionate change to protect teenagers? Tell us your …

State House News Service Weekly Roundup: Exit 10A

Recap and analysis of the week in state government.

The rush from Beacon Hill to the westbound turnpike this week had as much to do with two of Worcester's political sons beating feet from the capitol as with the impending Memorial Day weekend. As Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray attempted as graceful an exit as possible from politics, fellow Worcester Democrat Rep. John Fresolo made his hasty escape under an ethics cloud feeling "marginalized" by his peers and pressured to resign, which he did. If not for those two storylines, the focus may have been on the Senate's breakneck budget debate concluding Thursday night as senators wiped their hands clean of 725 amendments and passed a $34 billion fiscal 2014 budget without the need for Senate President Therese Murray to threaten a Friday or Saturday …

Thomson Country Club Pool Opening Pushed Back

Owner Nick Yebba, Sr. plans to open on June 8, or before.

The pool at the Thomson Country Club will not be open Memorial Day weekend, but should be ready for guests by June 8, according to Owner Nick Yebba, Sr.  The pool and tennis courts, which will now be referred to as Resorts North, were supposed to be open this weekend. However, the weather has postponed some of the resurfacing that was planned for this past week, Yebba said. You need several dry days in a row to complete some of the work necessary to open, Yebba told Patch. He hopes that the pool and tennis courts will be complete and ready for guests on June 8 or before. Membership applications are now available at ResortsNorth.com.
