Violent Crimes Down, Property Crimes Up in North Reading

The FBI's Uniform Crime Report is released each fall.

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report shows that violent crimes continue to drop in North Reading, while other crimes showed an uptick in 2012.

The FBI's annual report includes information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. The information is compiled and released to the public in the fall after the reporting year.

There were 15 reported violent crimes in North Reading in 2012, which is a decrease from 18 in 2011 and 21 in 2010. Violent crime includes murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

There were no forcible rapes or murders reported in North Reading in 2012. There were three reported forcible rapes in 2011 and two in 2010.

Aggravated assaulted also dropped with nine reported in 2012 compared to 11 in 2011 and 18 in 2010.

Property crimes continue to be the most reported crimes in North Reading. There were 148 property crimes reported in 2012, which is slightly up from 145 in 2011 and 128 in 2010.

After a drop in burglaries in 2011, those crimes increased in 2012. There were 40 burglaries in 2012 compared to 28 in 2011. The 2012 numbers are similar to 2010 when 41 burglaries were reported in North Reading.

Robberies ticked up slightly in 2012 with five reported compared to four in 2011 and one in 2010.

Larceny-thefts dropped to 101 reports in 2012, which was down from 111 in 2011, but more than 84 reported in 2010.

There were seven motor vehicle thefts reported in 2012, which is up from six in 2011 and three in 2010.
